Koreans are hot for Pho

South Korean Flag

Wow! According to this article there are over 200 pho restaurants in Seoul. Apparently, Pho took a very ciruitous route to get there: it did not come directly from Viet Nam but rather arrived with Koreans returning from the United States. Some Koreans (who stayed in the United States) liked pho so much that they opened their own pho restaurants. As a result, many Korean-owned pho restaurants dot the streets in the area known as Koreatown in Los Angeles.

It's not a surprise that Pho is so popular with Koreans. Our favorite dish is similar to an oxtail soup Koreans enjoy called Ggori-gom-tahng. We have sampled this soup in L.A.'s Koreatown and enjoyed it. Of course, it does not compare to a bowl of pho in our eyes!

Treasure Island Pho

Treasure Island PhoNow you don't have to travel off the strip to get a bowl of pho in Las Vegas. The Coffee Shop at Treasure Island is now serving up hot bowls of noodle soup seven days a week.

A Bad Bowl of Pho?

Is it possible to have a bad bowl of pho? Our readers in Sweden, Greenland and other parts of the world will probably answer "no". But discerning pho-lovers will surely nod their heads "yes". From cloudy, cold broth to clumpy and over-cooked noodles many things can ruin a good bowl of pho. Wilted veggies? Bad. Meat with freezer burn? Bad.

Read the spirited discussion on Yelp! about bad pho and weigh in on the comments here with your opinion: what do you think makes for bad pho?

The Best Pho in Seattle

KUOW

We were contacted in early March by producers from Seattle's public radio station, KUOW, about being interviewed during an upcoming program about the best pho restaurants in Seattle. Unfortunately we had to pass on the opportunity but recommended Andrea Nguyen from VietWorldKitchen.com.

The show featured discussions of the origins of pho, criteria for judging a good bowl vs. a bad bowl and of course where to find good bowls in Seattle. Locals called in and raved about their favorite locations. Many of these can be found in our directory of pho restaurants in Seattle, Washingtion.

You can listen to the segement online via KUOW's website.
